You publish a helpful page, it ranks well, and the visits still go down. If that sounds familiar, you are not imagining it. A growing share of people now get their answer from an AI summary at the top of Google and never click anything.
That is why AI search optimization has become the topic every site owner is asking about. The good news is that it is far less mysterious than the hype suggests. Google has now told us, in plain words, what helps and what does not.
This guide explains what changed, then walks through 7 steps you can apply to a WordPress and Elementor site this week.
What changed in search in 2026
Three numbers tell the story.
- 68% of US Google searches ended without a click in the first four months of 2026, according to a SparkToro study based on Similarweb data. In 2024 the figure was about 60%.
- AI Overviews now appear on more than 20% of Google searches. The same study found that when one shows up, click-through rates drop by nearly 60%.
- AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users, a figure Google shared at its I/O 2026 event.
So fewer searches send a visitor to a website, and the ones that do are harder to win. The new goal is not only to rank. It is to be one of the sources the AI answer links to and quotes.
What AI search optimization really means
You will see many new labels for this work, such as GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization). They sound like brand new skills that need brand new tools.
Google disagrees. In May 2026 it published a guide called “Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search”. Its position is that optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO, because AI Overviews and AI Mode are built on the same ranking and quality systems as normal results.
The guide also lists tactics you do not need for Google Search. That list is useful because it saves you time and money.
| Trendy tactic | What Google says |
|---|---|
| Adding an llms.txt file | Not needed. No special AI files are required. |
| Chopping content into tiny chunks | Not needed. Its systems can find the relevant part of a longer page. |
| Rewriting pages in a special AI style | Not needed. AI systems understand synonyms and meaning. |
| Special AI schema markup | Not needed. Normal structured data still matters for rich results. |
| Buying or faking brand mentions | Not as helpful as it might seem. |
With the myths out of the way, here is what does help.
7 steps to get your WordPress site cited by AI search
1. Make sure AI systems can reach your pages
A page must be indexed and allowed to show a snippet before it can appear in an AI answer. Check three things:
- In Settings > Reading, the box “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” is unticked.
- Your robots.txt file does not block important pages.
- Your security plugin, CDN or host is not blocking Googlebot. Some bot protection settings do this by accident.
Then open Google Search Console and use the URL Inspection tool on your most important pages.
2. Write what only you can write
Google’s guide asks for non-commodity content, which means information that goes beyond common knowledge. An AI model can already produce a generic “what is a landing page” article. It cannot produce your test results, your prices, your client stories or your photos.
Before you publish, ask one question: what is on this page that nobody else has? Add real numbers, screenshots, a short case study or a clear opinion based on experience.
3. Answer the question first
AI answers are built from clear statements. Help them by putting the direct answer in the first one or two sentences under each heading, then adding detail below.
Use headings that sound like real questions, such as “How much does a WordPress site cost in 2026?”. This is not a trick for robots. It is simply how busy readers like to read.
4. Use clean, semantic structure
Semantic HTML tells machines what each part of a page is. In Elementor, that comes down to a few habits:
- Use one H1 per page, then H2 and H3 in order. Do not pick a heading level only because of its size.
- Set the HTML tag of your containers to header, main, section, article and footer where it fits.
- Use real list and table elements for lists and comparisons, not text lined up with spaces.
- Keep important information as text. Words locked inside an image are much harder to use.
5. Keep structured data honest
You do not need special AI markup, but standard schema still helps search engines understand your page. A good SEO plugin adds Article, Product and breadcrumb schema for you.
The key rule from Google is that structured data must match what visitors can see. If your FAQ schema contains a question, that question and answer must be visible on the page too.
6. Keep the page fast and pleasant
Page experience is on Google’s list for AI features as well. A slow, jumpy page with pop-ups on top of the content is a weak source for any search system.
Compress images to WebP, remove plugins you do not use, and load only the widgets a page needs. If speed is your main problem, start there before you touch anything else.
7. Measure it the right way
Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted in the Search Console Performance report under the “Web” search type. There is no separate AI filter, so watch the bigger picture:
- Impressions rising while clicks stay flat is normal now. It often means you are being shown inside AI answers.
- Track leads, sales and sign-ups, not only visits. Google says clicks from AI answers tend to be higher quality.
- Search your main topics in AI Mode once a month and note which sites get cited.
What about ChatGPT and other AI assistants?
Google’s guide only speaks for Google. Other AI assistants use their own crawlers and their own rules, and none of them publish a full playbook.
The safe approach is the same foundation: pages that load without errors, clear text, original information and a brand that real people mention. Those qualities travel well between every search tool, old or new.
Where Bright Addons fits in
Several of the steps above are about structure, and structure is easier with the right building blocks. Bright Addons gives you 20 free Elementor widgets, with 60+ in Pro from $19 per year, built to output clean and lightweight markup.
Widgets such as accordions, tables and content lists help you present answers in a clear format that readers and search systems can both follow. You can browse the full list on the widgets page, compare plans on the pricing page, or read setup guides in the docs.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI search optimization different from SEO?
For Google, no. Its May 2026 guide says that optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO, because AI Overviews and AI Mode rely on the same core ranking and quality systems.
Do I need an llms.txt file on my WordPress site?
Not for Google Search. Google says you do not need to create new machine-readable files or AI text files to appear in its AI features. Adding one does no harm, but it should not be your priority.
Can I stop Google from using my content in AI Overviews?
Yes, with limits. You can use the nosnippet, data-nosnippet or max-snippet controls to restrict what is shown from a page. Keep in mind that these also reduce how your page appears in normal search results.
How long does it take to appear in AI answers?
There is no fixed timeline and no guarantee. A page first needs to be crawled and indexed, which can take days to weeks. After that, original and clearly structured content gives you the best chance.
Final thoughts
Search is changing fast, but the answer is calmer than the headlines. AI search optimization in 2026 is good SEO done carefully: pages that can be crawled, content only you can write, clear answers, clean structure and a fast experience.
Skip the gimmicks, pick two of the seven steps and apply them to your most important page today. Then check your results in Search Console next month.
